Castle Ruins Meilleraye (Beaulieu Sub Parthenay, Deux-Sevres)



At the site of an ancient medieval castle, bought in 1574 by Jean de La door, his nephew Charles I built the Porte the present castle from 1620. The castle forms a quadrilateral surrounded by a moat. The gate consists of a large open topped by an entablature supported by two Doric columns. A wooden bridge leads to court of honor. In contrast, another bridge leads to the main building with mullioned bay. It is south facing and two wings included service buildings in ruins, with only the cellars remain. The door of the main building is surmounted by a pediment and a circular cartridge containing the arms of the family. The buildings are organized in a common great regularity around the course.
